JUNE 2007

Students of the Month:  The junior student of the month for June is Dakota DeMars.  The adult student is Mrs. Debbie Ragone.  We believe they are excellent examples of the finest qualities in TKD, and display the tenets of Taekwon-Do (Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit). Congratulations!   Please visit the webpage to view their information.

Class Picnic & Testing:  We will have a class workout, testing and picnic on Saturday, June 16th at the Base Lake Pavillion.  Mr. Finan, will be testing for 2nd degree.  This testing will start promptly at 10:30 am and will be followed by a class workout and finish with a cook-out and PICNIC.  All students, even those not testing, are expected to attend.  If you cannot attend you must let Mr. Todd or Mr. Bushor know in advance.  Parents, family, and friends are all invited to watch and take pictures or video during the testing.  Come and support Mr. Finan’s testing to his next level.  The family picnic starts at 3pm.  There will be a few games for the kids and for dinner we will provide hot dogs, brats, buns, condiments, plates, napkins, and utensils.  Please bring a side dish to share and drinks for your family! We will be at the Base Lake at pavilion #5, between the boat house and the big play ground! Please wear your uniform for the class portion, but bring a change of clothes for the cookout.  There are bathrooms in the boat house that you can use to change after class.

Please RSVP to any of the following:

Mrs. Finan at 884-7107 or cfinan3@cox.net
Mrs. Carter at 293-7577 or carteramy@cox.net
Mrs. MacCaffrey at maccaffrey@cox.net

Region 6 Camp:  The camp Registration Form and information is now posted on the web site. We also sent home the registration form and a cover letter.  There is a second page to the registration form on the website that covers the release and waiver.  Please download and sign it. The camp this year will be held August 10th through the 12th in Trenton, Missouri.  This is about 3 ½ hours from Bellevue and is over 2 hours closer than the camp has been in the past few years.  This is a new location with a new training and food format.  It should be exciting and offer great training.  The prices are:  White belt through 3rd degree $95.00 per student.  A family rate is offered this year with the first student being full price than each additional family member paying $75.00 per student.  Any students that want to attend and not stay at the camp will pay $65.00 per student.  Parents, etc., that want to attend but not participate in classes will pay $65.00 per person.  Again, these fees pay for all your training, lodging, food and a camp t-shirt.  Everyone will receive a t-shirt this year.  You will be required to bring your own pillow, linens, blankets, etc.  You will also need to bring bathroom items and towels for showering and sleeping.  Last year Axe Taekwon-Do had the largest group there and we want to do the same again this year.  We need the applications and a deposit of $25 turned into Mr. Todd by June 25th.  The remainder of the camp fee will be paid at camp.  Please see Mr. Todd or Mr. Bushor if you have any questions.  This is a big event and we take students of all ages.

New Articles

Each month we invite anyone to submit articles for publication.  This month we provide the following from Mr. Finan:

Courtesy (By Patrick J. Finan, 1st degree)

Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, Indomitable Spirit…These are the tenets of Taekwon-Do.  We say them before and after class from day one in Taekwon-Do.  We are supposed to live by them, but do we really know what they mean?

Let’s start with courtesy.  Courtesy is showing respect to others; being polite.  It does not matter if they are senior or junior to you, you should show them the same respect you would expect them to show to you.  This could be as simple as holding the door open for someone.

Think of it like the Golden Rule.  Treat others as you would like to be treated.  If you are courteous to someone, they will be courteous to you in return.  Where as, if you are disrespectful to someone, you will not earn their trust or respect.  That is not something you can demand, it must be earned.

Another way to show courtesy is to listen.  I mean REALLY listen.  You may hear what is being said, but you need to listen in order to take it in and understand the meaning of what is said.  There is a difference between hearing someone and listening to them.  The best way to listen is to have eye contact with the person talking, and focus on them.  Do not start looking around the room to see what everyone else is doing or start playing with your uniform, because you will be distracted and not focused on the message.

Courtesy is something everyone needs to work on.  The higher in rank you are, the more people will look to you to see how things are done.  If they see you being disrespectful to someone, senior or junior, they will think it is ok to be disrespectful as well.  Lead by example.  Show the respect to your instructors that they deserve.  It does not matter if you are a white belt or a 6th Dan, courtesy never goes away.  The way you address someone during class shows courtesy.  If you watch Mr. Todd and Mr. Bushor, you will always hear them address people in the class with respect.  They show it to you and expect you to show it to them in return.  They are setting the example for all of us to follow.

So, next time you are in class, think about how you are acting toward others in the class.  Think about who is looking at you and following your lead.  Courtesy can be contagious, so start spreading it around.

Summer Months (By Ricky J. Todd, 6th degree)

We are now into the summer months of Taekwon-Do and there are many events and distractions for students.  We understand family vacations and some students desire to play sports or attend summer events.  However several requirements still remain for class.  You must still inform Mr. Bushor or I if you are going to be absent from class.  You can email me at ustfneb@cox.net or Mr. Bushor at kbushor@cox.net.  Our phone numbers are also on the webpage.  It is extremely poor etiquette to not call us.

The other requirement is you must 85% of all classes prior during a testing cycle (3 months) to be considered for promotion.  If you are out of class for vacation or sports for a month this will delay your promotion consideration.  Mr. Bushor and I do not have a problem with this but simply put you must put in the time to be considered for promotion.  Of course this is only one aspect of being considered for promotion, with physical & mental skill also being considered.  However we start our testing eligible list each cycle with an attendance check.  This also applies to black belts.

Typically the class sizes are smaller during the summer and start to increase in the fall.  Remember Taekwon-Do can be practiced for a lifetime. It is very hard to drop out for weeks or months and then return.  Skills diminish quickly so try to keep in class!

Camp is rapidly approaching.  Do you wonder why I push it so much?  It is because you will really enjoy the camp.  It is time away from here with students from your class and you are totally immersed in a Taekwon-Do environment.  You will get to know other students better and really enjoy the training.  During the camp you are exposed to other instructors and teaching methods.  Maybe you just are not getting down that new kick and something you see at camp will suddenly make sense to you.  It is also nice to see students from other states doing the same exact techniques as you and yes, struggling to get that new kick or pattern learned.  If you have attended camp in the past you will know what I mean.  If not, you should really attend this year.  I am really hoping that we have at least 30 people attend this year.  So get those forms completed and turned in!  Don’t worry about not knowing anyone, there will be plenty of students from our school.  For the parents of the younger students, you can either attend or we will have enough other parents attending to provide constant supervision.  Finally, the food should be good this year.  I am just kidding when I say that we will live on Code Red and cookies.  If any parents have questions, please call, email or stop by the school and talk with Mr. Bushor or me.

Finally, I am completely reworking the website.  It should be finished this month.  I want to send a big “Thank You” to Mr. David Araujo for providing a new look and the software.  It’s a slow process to change because I want to ensure it works perfectly and looks great.  Keep checking!
