May

Student of the Month:  The students of the month for May are Ms. Kaitlin Jones and Ms. Samantha Finan.  We believe they are excellent examples of the finest qualities in TKD, and display the tenets of Taekwon-Do (Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit). Taekwon!  Please visit the webpage to their information.

Black Belt Testing:  Congratulations to Ms. Jessica Fuller on her promotion to 2nd degree black belt.  Also to Mr. Brandon Franklin, Ms. Jordan Brumbaugh and Mrs. Lynne MacCaffrey on their promotion to 1st degree black belt.  After the testing all Axe black belts went to the Korea House for a great Korean dinner and discussion.

Color Belt Testing:  Congratulations to all students on their recent testing.  From our discussion with all black belts after the testing it appears we need to focus more on step sparring which we will during the next month.  We will also increase the free sparring so ensure you have the required gear, you can order gear through Mr. Bushor ($69.00 for head gear, hand gear, and foot gear).

Memorial Day:  There will NOT be a class on Saturday, May 24th.  Master Todd and Mr. Bushor will not be available that weekend, so we hope everyone has a great holiday weekend.

Team Moms:  Axe Taekwon-Do has an unofficial organization known as the Team Moms.  The Team Moms is open to everyone (Moms, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, Wives, Grand Parents, Wicked Step-Sisters (OK, maybe that is going too far!)).  The Team Moms have helped organize Master Todd’s testing events, and have set up class events like picnics and other events.  We will do our best to get the word out to everyone in the class when the Team Moms are having meetings.

Email Addresses:  If you did not get this News Letter via email, that means that Mr. Bushor either doesn’t have your email address or has the wrong email address for you.  Master Todd and Mr. Bushor use email as the primary means to pass information out to our class.  Send Mr. Bushor an email with your email address included and he will add it to the master list.

Youth Center Rules:  And now a word from our sponsor (the Youth Center).  Over the many years of Taekwon-Do classes at the Youth Center we have had very few problems with them (and them with us).  Miss Eva asked me to pass on a few Youth Center rules that we all need to make sure we are following.

The Youth Center policy is for every one to wear shoes in the Youth Center except when we are practicing TKD.  That means you must wear shoes into and out of the Youth Center, you must put on shoes if you go out to get a drink or go to the bathroom, you must wear shoes if you are waiting in the snack area for class to start or for your parents to pick you up.  Enough said about that…

Beginning Monday, May 19th, only Teen Agers are allowed in the Youth Center after 5 P.M. unless you are participating in a class (like Taekwon-Do).  This means that if you are 12 years old or younger you are not allowed in the Youth Center after 5 P.M. unless you are in the gym.

The Youth Center policy on tuition is you must pay before the first class of each month.  Any parents or students making payments after the 15th of the month will be charged a late fee.  If you are not going to be in class for the entire month, the instructors can authorize a Leave of Absence and you will not be charged TKD tuition for that month (Youth Center fees still apply).  This must be done in advance and is only allowed if you will miss the entire month.  If you are taking a long vacation, taking classes, or expect to be TDY, etc., let Mr. Bushor or Master Todd know so they can notify the front desk.  It is not enough to tell the front desk you will be gone, one of the Instructors must verify the Leave of Absence.

90 Seconds:  (By Master Ricky Todd, 7th Degree Black Belt)
Did you know that the longest pattern in Taekwon-Do which is So-San consists of 72 movements?  Did you know you can perform this correctly in about 90 seconds?  I constantly ask students if they are practicing their patterns or any Taekwon-Do at home and usually they are not.  I know I hear the excuses of students being too busy with homework, chores or other activities.  I guarantee it takes less time to walk through your pattern than it does to start your computer, load your game in your Xbox, Playstation, Wii or for Ms. Bowing to memorize the newest Hannah Montana song.

My point is that in 90 seconds I can perform any pattern.  I am certain you have an additional 5-10 minutes each day regardless of how many other activities or work that you do each day.  Only 5-10 minutes per day would make a huge difference in your Taekwon-Do performance and understanding of your pattern.  You don’t need to stretch, put on your dobok or do anything to walk through your pattern.

When I was preparing for my 7th degree test I did all my patterns each day, that took much longer than 90 seconds but you are not working 24 patterns at one time.  Most students are only working on a few patterns.  In my past I have walked through patterns on flight lines, on top of missile silos, in weapon storage facilities, court rooms, hallways, airports, garages, basements, showers, motel rooms, trailers, racquet ball courts, weight rooms, saunas, pools (in the water), lakes, and in open fields just to name a few places.  You can “do” Taekwon-Do anywhere; you don’t need a special place.  Just start working on those patterns!
